Applying to UCC

Upper Canada College seeks to admit well-rounded boys who stand out from the crowd in a variety of ways — through academic performance, involvement in extra-curricular activities, a natural aptitude for arts or athletics, etc. We're looking for the best boys from across Canada and around the world.

Approximate Intake - September 2014 Entry

SK, Grades 3, 5, 6, 7 and Year 2 are main entry points at UCC. At other grade levels, admission is dependent on changes in enrolment. Approximately 30 boarding students are admitted annually beginning in Year 1. For limited-entry levels, selected applicants will be contacted as space permits.

Admission Process

STEP 1 – Submit the Inquiry Form and Stay Connected

All interested families should complete the online Inquiry Form to receive a copy of our UCC viewbook. We also encourage you to sign up for Blues News, our bi-weekly admission e-newsletter, so that we can keep you informed about important admission information and what’s happening at UCC.

STEP 2 – Plan a Visit

A campus tour is the best way to determine whether UCC feels like the right fit for your son. As such, we invite you to join us during one of our open houses on Oct. 24 and 25

Student-led tours are also available Monday, Wednesday or Friday at 1 p.m. for the Upper School (Grade 8 to 12) and 2 p.m. for the Prep School (SK to Grade 7) from late October to May.

Registration is required for both open houses and tours. Visit to register.

Boarding candidates are invited to experience UCC by scheduling an overnight stay. Visits can be arranged by contacting Tricia Rankin at or 416-488-1125, ext. 2221.

STEP 3 – Submit Application and Required Documents Online

The deadline to apply as a day student for September 2014 entry was Dec. 6, 2013. Boarding applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with the first round of offers being made in early December.

Click on the GoUCC! Online button above to create your account and start your application. Complete and submit the online application form and upload PDF copies of both the final June 2012 school reports and final June 2013 school reports, as well as either a birth certificate or passport, by Dec. 6, 2013 for day students. We also ask that you upload a copy of your son’s 2013-2014 first term or semester report as soon as it becomes available, which is usually in January or February. Interim reports are helpful but not required. Please use the Candidate Document Submission Form that's available by accessing your GoUCC! account.

Please note that in some cases we may request additional documents in order to supplement a candidate’s file. These materials may include teacher recommendations, copies of graded schoolwork and proof of English language proficiency. Please don't submit any additional documents unless requested.

STEP 4 – Apply for Financial Assistance (if applicable)

Financial assistance awards are allocated yearly, based on family need, and range from $5,000 to full tuition. Interested candidates for Grade 5 and above are encouraged to apply by December 31, 2013. Visit to learn more.

STEP 5 – Complete the Entrance Test/Assessment

Grade 7+ (Day): All candidates are required to register for and write the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) as early as possible and no later than December 31, 2013 for day applicants. Visit for more information.

Boarding: Applicants should write the SSAT as early as possible. Visit for details and a list of international locations. If the SSAT isn't available in your area, please contact Tricia Rankin at or 416-488-1125, ext. 2221 to make alternate arrangements.

Please include UCC as a score recipient (test centre code 7858) when you register for the SSAT.

Grade 5 and 6: Applicants are required to write an entrance test at UCC on either Dec. 11, 2013 or Jan. 18, 2014. Both sessions take place from 9 to 11 a.m.

Grade 3: Applicants are required to write the entrance test at UCC on Jan. 22, 2014.

Senior Kindergarten: Assessments take place on March 29, 2014. We will contact you in early March regarding your son’s assessment time.

Limited-entry: Should space permit, selected candidates will be contacted to arrange an assessment during the week of April 14 to 17, 2014.

STEP 6 – Schedule an Interview

Grade 3, 5, 6, 7+ (Day): Upon receipt of all required documents, selected candidates will be contacted to arrange an interview. Interviews take place from November through mid-February for day applicants and through spring for boarding candidates.

The interview is about 45 minutes in total. Before spending time with the applicant, one of our admission counsellors will meet briefly with parents. During the applicant interview, the student will be asked to read a short piece while the remainder of the time is a relaxed conversation where he's encouraged to share information about himself and get to know us. The interview is meant to give insight into the applicant and family’s personalities, interests and values. It's also an opportunity for parents to gain a deeper insight into who we are and what we do at UCC.

Grade 5, 6, 7 + (Day): While the admission counsellor meets with parents, the applicant will be asked to complete a short writing sample. The writing exercise has two purposes: to give the applicant an opportunity to express himself creatively; and give us a snapshot of his ability to express himself thoughtfully and creatively. The writing sample isn't graded.

Boarding: Interviews may take place via Skype for international students if a campus visit isn't possible. Please note that in some cases interviews won't be scheduled until test results have been received.

Senior Kindergarten: Family visits take place during the week of March 24 to 28, 2014. Families will be contacted in late February to schedule their visit.

Limited-entry: Should space permit, selected candidates will be contacted to arrange an interview during the week of April 14 to 17, 2014.

We request that at least one parent participate in the interview process.

Admission Decisions

Grades 3, 5, 6, 7 and Year 2 (Day): Admission decisions will be sent on Feb. 25, 2014.

Boarding: Decisions begin in early December and continue on a rolling basis.

Senior Kindergarten: Admission decisions will be sent on April 2, 2014.
